MORE ON BUSH'S POLICIES:
On International Sexual Health:
The Global Gag Rule, reinstated by President Bush in 2001, prohibits any international organization receiving US funds from performing abortions, providing education about reproductive choice, or referring clients to safe abortion providers.
On domestic abortion rights:
In 2003, Bush signed the federal abortion ban. This ban would have criminalized abortions performed after 15 weeks of pregnancy, regardless of the mother's health. Fifteen states have passed unenforceable total bans on abortion, while 26 passed unenforceable bans on abortions performed as early as 12 weeks into pregnancy. For now, federal courts have declared these laws unconstitutional. But they are poised to go into quick effect should the Supreme Court overturn Roe V. Wade.
On Plan B:
In 2004, the Food and Drug Administration rejected an application to allow over-the-counter sales of the morning-after pill. In making this decision, the organization ignored the recommendations of an independent advisory panel as well as the agency's own scientific review.
On Abstinence-Only Education:
Federal funding for abstinence-only education has more than doubled in recent years. In contrast, the government does not provide any support for comprehensive sexual health education. Over 80% of the abstinence-only curricula include false information about the effectiveness of contraceptives, the risks of abortion, and HIV transmission.
